2U, Our Program Partner
Simmons School of Social Work has partnered with 2U Inc. to power and support SocialWork@Simmons. Founded in 2008 by a team of education and technology veterans, 2U enables leading colleges and universities to deliver their high-quality degree programs online to qualified students everywhere.
In addition to Simmons College, 2U currently works with a number of leading U.S. universities to support their online master’s programs, including Northwestern University, University of Southern California, UC Berkeley, Georgetown University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 2U supports graduate and doctorate programs across the fields of education, social work, nursing, business, public administration, law, international affairs, public health, health care administration, counseling, and data science.
As part of our partnership, 2U provides the following services:
Students in SocialWork@Simmons online Master of Social Work program access a virtual campus for their classes, coursework, and networking. The platform, which is available from most Internet-enabled devices, is powered by 2U. The 2U approach is best described as No Back Row® and features an online classroom that brings students face-to-face for live class sessions. Program instruction is designed and led by Simmons’s faculty with intuitive, familiar features that foster connection and collaboration.
To make the online social work program as convenient as possible, 2U brings the online campus to mobile devices with apps for smartphones and tablets. These apps allow students to access coursework online and offline whenever it is convenient for them.
In preparation for live class discussions, students watch prerecorded content created by School of Social Work faculty in collaboration with 2U content strategists. The 2U team helps partner university faculty members turn their traditional classroom lectures and materials into engaging, interactive content that is custom made for the online environment. 2U also provides Simmons with video production services, while Simmons faculty authors and delivers all content.
Course content is not simply recorded lectures, but an interactive learning experience. Coursework includes video case studies, discussions between professors and real students, dynamic faculty presentations, and interactive elements in which professors can see students’ progress and leave comments and feedback leading up to the live class session.
Simmons College works with 2U to identify and reach the most qualified candidates across the country. 2U’s marketing and recruiting efforts support Simmons’s goal of finding students who are most likely to succeed in the rigorous Master of Social Work program. 2U also provides an online application and application management system, which ensures a seamless process for applicants and for the School of Social Work administrators who review candidates. As with all Simmons programs, Simmons administration will review all applications and determine a candidates’ final admissions decision.
Student and Faculty Support
2U prepares faculty to deliver classes and course materials on the online platform so that they are best able to use the tools available in the virtual classroom. 2U also works one on one with students upon enrollment to help acclimate them to the program and walk through the various academic and social features that are provided to them. Dedicated support continues throughout the program with technical assistance available during every live session.
2U provides both Simmons College and its students with a dedicated field placement team. Through technology-enabled services, this team works with Simmons faculty to identify an appropriate clinical field placement site for each student based on their location. 2U’s field placement support allows students to meet the hands-on clinical training requirements of the Master of Social Work program without having to relocate.
