Simmons School of Social Work was founded in 1904 as a joint venture with Harvard University, to train social workers to create meaningful change for individuals, families, and communities.

SocialWork@Simmons — our online Master of Social Work (MSW) program — welcomes a new generation of social advocates into the Simmons community and empowers them to address the most pressing issues affecting our society.

Preparing Justice-Focused Advocates

Simmons MSW students and alumni are dedicated advocates who work to empower all individuals, especially those who have been historically marginalized or oppressed. Our rigorous curriculum, developed and led by expert Simmons faculty, incorporates social justice values and a multicultural perspective to prepare students for direct practice in a wide range of clinical settings.

Practicum Education

Students partner with a practicum placement specialist to find a site in or near their communities, where they gain hands-on experience and develop confidence as professional social workers.

  • Clinically-focused practicum education experiences
  • 1,000 plus hours of practicum experience
  • National network of practicum placement sites

Simulated Practicum Experience

Traditional MSW students also attend weekly live sessions in an immersive online learning lab environment, where they:

  • participate in simulated client experiences and role-play scenarios
  • receive supportive peer and instructor feedback
  • prepare for success in a future community site setting

Pursue a Certificate With the MSW

Students can pursue a certificate program to gain the advanced skills needed for careers in specific focus areas:

  • Mental Health Practice
  • Trauma Practice
  • Clinical Practice with Active Service Members, Veterans, and Families
