  1. Do I need to secure my own field placements?

No. Our clinical placement team will locate an appropriate placement site in or near your community.

  2. What will be the focus of my placement each semester?

In your first year, or foundation year, your fieldwork will help you build your clinical social work skills through generalized practice. In your advanced year, your placement will help you build advanced clinical knowledge and skills.

  3. How much time should I expect to spend at my placement site?

Foundation-year placements require you to complete two 8-hour days each week (16 hours per week) for 28 weeks.

Advanced-year placements require you to complete two-and-a-half working days each week (two 8-hours days; one 4-hour shift) or 20 hours per week for 30 weeks.

  4. Can I complete my placement where I work?

If you are currently employed in a social service agency or clinical setting, you may apply to have an agency-based field placement for one of your two field placements. Worksite field placements must meet the Simmons SSW criteria. The criteria include a different work assignment and new supervisor. Your supervisor must have an M.S.W. and participate in a field instructor training provided through Simmons SSW.

  5. Does SocialWork@Simmons have relationships with social work agencies in my area?

The SocialWork@Simmons field placement team has relationships with field education sites across the United States, allowing us to identify appropriate field placement sites in your area.

  6. How far will my clinical placement be from where I live? How far will I have to drive?

We make every attempt to locate a placement site that meets your educational needs. At times, the best placement match is farther from your home than you may prefer. You are required to be able to commute up to 60 miles to your placement site. If you are requesting accommodations at your field placement site, please inform the placement team and contact the Simmons disability office at 1-617-521-2474 for assistance.

  7. When does field placement begin?

If you attend part time, your field placement will begin at the start of your fourth term. If you attend full time, your placement will begin when you start classes.

  8. Will I receive credit for the field placement?

Yes. Field education is a 4-credit course.
